Inauguration The inaugural function of the conference was held on January 27 at 5.30 pm. Prof K.Somasekhara Rao welcomed the dignitaries and gathering. Prof P.S.N.Raju introduced the dignitaries. Prof Y.C.Simhadri, Hon. Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University presided over the function and presented the presidential address. He observed that in India the trend towards digital library centres is gaining strength and several libraries are involved in digitization projects. Dr C.S.Rao, Advisor to Govt. of Andhra Pradesh on Information Technology, Hyderabad, delivered keynote address. In his speech he focused on the need for technology literacy and advised to bring all engineering and affiliated colleges in Andhra University area under one integrated network system. Prof C.Saskala, Editor of the Conference volume introduced the theme of the Conference. Shri K.Ayyappa Naidu, Director, Visakha Steel Plant, Visakhapatnam, the Guest of Honor at the function, released the conference volume while Pof D.Panduranga Rao, Principal, College of Arts and Commerce released the Souvenir on the occasion. Shri N.V.Satyanarayana, CMD, Informatics India Pvt. Ltd and Vice President SIS, in his speech, observed the LIS professionals have more options to serve their user community in the digital environment. Prof M.P.Satija, Conference Director presented the theme paper on the occasion. Dr. Ramesh Kundra, Secretary, SIS announced the SIS Fellowships to Dr Rajwant Singh Chilana, USA and Dr Divya Srivastava, ICMR, New Delhi. Prof. Y.C.Simhadri, Hon. Vice Chancellor felicitated Dr Divya Srivastava, SIS Fellowship awardee and other dignitaries on the dais. Dr T.M.K.Gandhi, Deputy Librarian, proposed vote of thanks. Two As a part of the Convention, two Pre-Conference Tutorials were also organized on 27th January on two major themes Tutorial: I Dspace: Tutorial I on Dspace was conducted by Dr Devika P Madalli, Lecturer, D.R.T.C., Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore with the presentation and demonstrations in Computer Laboratory. Tutorial II: E-Publishing Tutorial II on E-Publishing was imparted by Mr M G Sreekumar, Librarian and Head of Centre for Digital Libraries, IIM, Khozhikode. Both the tutorials were well attended and marked with lively interactions. Technical Sessions To See the List of Accepted Papers Click here The technical sessions were scheduled for 28th and 29th in eight sessions. About 200 participants including 70 outside participants as also one from U.S.A. participated in the Conference. The technical sessions were divided under different themes as follows: 1. Design and implementation of Digital Information Services. 2. Types of Digital Information Services. 3. Open Access Initiatives for Digital Information Services. 4.
Promoting and Supporting of Digital Information Services to user
community. Prof M.P.Satija acted as Conference Director and Prof S.L.Sangam and Dr N.C.Jain served as Rapporteur Generals. The sessions were chaired by eminent professionals like: Dr Divya Srivastava, Dr N.C.Jain, Smt. Sasikala Subba Rao, Dr D.B.Ramesh, Dr Ramesh Kundra, Prof P.Soma Raju, Dr D.Rajyalakshmi Each session had a Rapporteur to assist the Rapporteur General. The following professionals served as rapporteurs: Dr. G.Babu Rao, Smt J.Vijaya Kumari, Dr M.Satyanarayana, Dr K.Satyanarayan, Dr N.D.Livingstone, Smt Y.V.Ramana, Dr Pushpanjali Jena Dr Raizada memorial lecture was delivered on 29th January by Prof C R Karisiddapp, Professor, DLIS, Karnatak University, Dharwad and Ex President, ILA. He stressed in his extempore lecture the need for change in professional attitudes and need to develop Open Access Archives and information literacy programmes by all types of libraries. Various leading information entrepreneurs / vendors have made presentations on their services and products that include Balanai Infotech, New Delhi, Elsevier India, New Delhi, Amex IT, Chennai, and Informatics India, Bangalore. The Organizing Committee with a view to encourage the younger generation of LIS professionals proposed to sponsor four members of LIS research scholars/students from four parts of the country. Under this scheme, Mr Gangadharesa from IISc ., Bangalore and Mr Nazim Mallik from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh attended the Conference and presented papers. The paper by Ms Chitra Rekha Kuffalikar, Head, Learning Resource Centre, Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Nagpur was adjudged as BEST PAPER PRESENTATION and she was awarded with certificate and memento. Valedictory Function The valedictory function of the conference was held at 4.30 pm on 29th January that was presided over by Prof P.S.N.Raju, Chairman of the Conference. Prof M.P.Satija, Conference Director spoke on the occasion. Dr N.C.Jain presented the Rapporteur General report and made the following resolutions that were accepted by the delegates presented.
